True/False Test Taking

Although most students prefer true and false questions, these types of questions can be tricky. The following strategies will enhance your ability to answer these questions correctly:
  • When you must make educated guesses, the majority of answers on true and false tests are usually true.

  • If it will not negatively impact your score, and you’re completely unsure of an answer, make an educated guess. You have a 1 in 2 chance of being right.

  • Carefully read the question, and monitor it for qualifiers or keywords that provide clues to the correct answer.

  • Every, only, always, and never are common qualifiers. Questions with qualifiers indicate whether an answer is true or false under the conditions described.

  • Questions containing sometimes, generally, and usually as qualifying words can be tricky. If you encounter a question with one of these qualifiers, pay attention to specific details and the circumstances being described in the question. In many cases, the correct answer will be true.

  • True and false questions can be tricky because they often contain information which is true but also information that is partially correct. If this is the case, then the answer is false since information in the question is not completely correct.
