Landscape Architecture Colleges & Degree Programs

Landscape architects design outdoor spaces and green areas for parks, recreational areas, housing developments, residences, and resorts that are both asthetically pleasing and functional. Landscape architecture requires a good eye for the artistic, a strong sense of creativity and an understanding of functional design.

Landscape architecture is an interdisciplinary field of study that pulls from several disciplines including urban planning, architecture, construction, ecology, hydrology, design, engineering and botany (study of plants). Over the last decade colleges and universities across the United States have developed degree programs that focus exclusively on landscape architecture.

Colleges and vocational schools offer landscape architecture degrees at the associate's, bachelor's and master's levels. Many schools also offer professional and graduate certificates in landscape architecture. The most common educational path pursued by aspiring landscape architects is to earn a bachelor's degree. Most bachelor degree programs in landscape architecture take 4-5 years to complete. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Landscape Architecture is the minimum requirement for licensure in most states.

Landscape architecture programs are designed to prepare students for the independent professional practice of landscape architecture and research in various aspects of the field. Includes instruction in geology and hydrology; soils, groundcovers, and horticultural elements; plant sciences; project and site planning; landscape design theory; ecology; applicable law and regulations; and professional responsibilities and standards.

Although regulations varies from state to state, most states require landscape architects to pass the Landscape Architect Registration Exam (LARE) and become licensed. Some states also have minimum education and experience requirements and require candidates to pass a state licensure exam in addition to the LARE.

While landscape architecture is a hands-on discipline, several colleges now offer hybrid programs that allow students to complete their degree both on campus and online. Below is a comprehensive directory of the accredited colleges and universities in the United States that offers courses, degrees and programs in landscape architecture.
