Foreign Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics College Majors and Degree Programs

Foreign language, literatures, and linguistics majors and degree programs are designed to study the writings and communications of other countries. Students may wish to learn to speak and write a specific foreign language, study the literature of another country or region, or focus on the scientific and humanistic study of linguistics (the study of language and its structure, semantics, phonetics, and syntax). Areas of focus available in these programs will vary college to college, but may include languages such as African, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, German, Russian, French, Italian, and others. Other courses might study ancient classical or Greek literature, applied linguistics, or the past and present literature of any foreign entity. As the economies of nations continue to become more and more integrated, there will be an increased need for people who can communicate in foreign languages, and who have an understanding of their literature and culture. In addition to business-related demands, there are many opportunities for people who want to teach foreign languages and literature in secondary or post-secondary education.
