Alabama Colleges and Universities

There are roughly 60 accredited colleges and universities located in Alabama. With an annual enrollment of just over 36,000 the University of Alabam Tuscaloosa is unquestionably the largest four-year higher education institution in state. When it comes to two-year community colleges, Calhoun Community College in Decatur, with an annual enrollment of roughly 12,100 is the largest. The Heritage Christian University, a religious seminary affiliated with the Churches of Christ, is the smallest higher education institution in the state. Spring Hill College, a Catholic sponsored school in Mobile, and the University of North Alabama, a public research university located in the city of Florence, are the oldest colleges, both established in 1830. Alabama is also home to eight four-year colleges and universities and three historically black two-year colleges.

Most of the colleges and universities in Alabama hold regional accreditation status through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Regional accreditation through SACS ensures the highest level of educational standards are met and that credits earned will be transferrable to other regionally accredited schools – which includes most four-year colleges and universities in the United States. A few of Alabama's colleges however maintain professional and/or national accreditation through the Association for Biblical Education (ABHE), Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), and the Council for Occupation Education (COE).

If you're interested in pursuing a career in medicine, you can choose between the University of Alabama at Birmingham or the University of South Alabama – which have the only two medical schools in the state. If you're seeking a career in law Alabama has a large selection of American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law schools. Some of the more popular ABA-accredited law schools in Alabama include Samford University, University of Alabama School of Law, Thomas Goode Jones School of Law, and the Cumberland School of Law. Unaccredited law programs are offered through the Miles Law School and Birmingham School of Law.

Alabama is also home to some of the top national university in the United States. Auburn University, the University of Alabama, the University of Alabama Birmingham, and University of Alabama in Huntsville are all ranked as Tier 1 national universities by U.S. News & World Report. The states top two public research universities are the University of Alabama Birmingham and University of Alabama in Huntsville.
