The colleges and universities ranked above were selected from a list of schools compiled by the U.S. Department of Education based on various criteria and academic success measures, including graduation rates, student to teacher ratio, and overall academic support provided to students. Schools were also ranked based on whether or not they accepted military credit recommendations provided by the American Council on Education (ACE). Many of the schools on our list also have administrators and leaders who are current or former service members.

Many of the schools on our list participate in the Yellow Ribbon program. The Yellow Ribbon program pays vets and certain service members for tuition to attend a public college or university as long as they are a resident of the state where the school is located. The level at which a college or university participates in the Yellow Ribbon program varies, so this is something you'll want to look into when researching a school to attend.

Some schools will offer vets and service members credit for training and formal course work completed while on active duty. Attending a college or university that accepts ACE credits allows veterans and service members to complete a college degree in a shorter amount of time, and consequently at a lower cost. Typically, if a service member or veteran has completed military training that mimics a course taught by the participating institution, they can apply to receive ACE college credit for that course.

Other criteria you'll want to consider when selecting a college or university as a veteran include graduation rate, student-to-faculty ratio, accreditation status, academic support, job placement rate, and default rate.
