Founded in 1885, the school's original name was Tempe Normal School for the Arizona Territory. It was renamed Arizona State College in 1945, and became a university in 1958. ASU was designated as a Research I institution in 1994, making it one of the country's youngest research universities.

ASU has four separate campus locations: Downtown Phoenix, West Phoenix, the polytechnic campus located in Mesa, Arizona, and the original campus in Tempe. These four campuses are divided into 16 schools and colleges, offering bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs in a wide variety of academic fields.

ASU is a very active research institution with annual research expenditures of nearly $400 million. It is a member of the Universities Research Association, a group of the nation's premier research universities. The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education has designated ASU as a "Research University with very high activity" (RU/VH).

ASU has a thriving campus community, with more than 13,000 on-campus resident students. The diverse student body participates in more than one thousand student clubs and campus organizations. All four ASU campuses have invested heavily in student facilities, including student housing, recreational centers and athletic facilities.

ASU sponsors a wide array of athletic programs. The school's sports teams, the Sun Devils, are Division I members of the NCAA's Pacific-12 Conference. Over the years, the Arizona State Sun Devils have won 23 national championships.
