Learning Theories

Learning is a process where humans acquire or expand knowledge through cognition, emotional experiences, and environmental factors, in conjunction with life experiences. The process of learning is centered on the actions occurring while one is learning something new. Learning theories are educated explanations of how learning occurs.

The following are the three most prominent categories for learning theories: constructivism, cognitivism, and behaviorism. Behaviorism is centered solely on what can be observed. Cognitive theories are centered on how the brain processes information when one is learning, while constructivism theories are focused on how people develop new theories or ideas.
