Is Homeschooling Right for You and Your Child

Many parents desiring to provide instruction differing from what is offered by the public school system are opting to homeschool their children. If you are mulling over the option of homeschooling your children, there are many factors you must consider to ensure it will benefit them.

Parents desiring to homeschool their children do not have to request special accommodations. They have the option of determining their children’s schooling schedule. In many cases, parents set-up a schedule similar to that of a public school to establish a routine for their children.

Parents opting to homeschool their kids make this decision because of the perceived benefits. For example, one of the prime motivations behind this decision is the flexibility parents have in determining how to educate their children. Parents do not have to rush their children through curriculum, as is the case in public schools. Likewise, children can study certain topics when they’re prepared to do so, and they can receive specialized attention from their parents whenever it’s needed. After children master a topic, their parents can introduce them to other topics. In public schools, children usually have to remain on the same schedule as other students, even if they understand the curriculum. Conversely, children struggling to understand classroom material are not rushed to move on to other subjects. Homeschooling parents also have the option of tailoring curriculum to the specific learning needs of their children.

Parents opting to homeschool their children usually enjoy determining the curriculum their children study. In particular, they can determine what specific subjects to emphasize and what moral and ethical concepts to teach their children. Likewise, homeschooling parents can implement religious instruction within homeschooling curriculum. Religious instruction is not permitted in public schools.

Many parents concerned about the safety at public schools are opting to homeschool their kids. This way, they can shield them from bullying, drugs, violence, and other safety hazards.

Even though there are numerous benefits to homeschooling, there are also many disadvantages. One of the biggest disadvantages is the lack of opportunity children have to socialize with their peers, but most school districts permit homeschooled children to participate in extra-curricular activities. It’s the responsibility of homeschooling parents to ensure their children have the opportunity to interact with other children their age.

Another common problem with homeschooling is the stress it can create for already busy parents. Many parents decide to homeschool their children only to later realize how stressful and difficult it can be. Regardless of how parents provide instruction, teaching requires commitment and time. Some people consider the fact that homeschooling parents often spend a large portion of their days as a negative aspect of homeschooling, especially if the homeschooling parent wants to work. Many homeschooling parents assume more responsibilities than they can handle.

Cost is another factor parents must consider when deciding whether to homeschool their children. It may not seem like it, but homeschooling can cost a lot of money, depending on the books and other educational materials purchased. However, parents have the option of how much they spend to instruct their children. To decrease expenses, parents can utilize public libraries, purchase used books, and share books and other learning materials with neighboring homeschooling families.

A child's long-term happiness and success is heavily influenced by the education they receive when they’re young. Before deciding whether or not to homeschool your children, be sure to evaluate the pros and cons, so the decision you make is beneficial for your children.
