Level of Award Definitions
Certificate - A postsecondary professional award that normally requires 2 years or less of full-time study to complete; examples include a certificate in cosmetology or emergency medical technology.
Associate's - An award that normally requires between 2 and 4 years of full-time study; examples include an associate degree in biology or computer information systems.
Bachelor's - An award that normally requires 4 years of full-time study; for example, a Bachelor's degree in English or engineering.
Advanced - An award after the bachelor degree; includes master and doctoral degrees. This category also includes post-baccalaureate and post-master's certificates.
Institution Type Definitions
Public - An educational institution whose programs and activities are operated by publicly elected or appointed school officials and which is supported primarily by public funds.
Private not-for-profit (non-profit) - An educational institution in which the individual(s) or agency in control receives no compensation, other than wages, rent, or other expenses for the assumption of risk. These include both independent not-for-profit schools and those affiliated with a religious organization.
Private for-profit - An educational institution in which the individual(s) or agency in control receives compensation other than wages, rent, or other expenses for the assumption of risk.
4-year - An institution authorized primarily to award Bachelor (or higher) degrees, such as a college or university.
2-year - An institution authorized to award Associate degrees or 2-year or longer certificates, such as a community or technical college.
Less than 2-year - An institution authorized to award certificates that are typically obtained in less than two years, such as licensed practical nurse or cosmetology.
Tuition & Fees Definitions
Tuition is a payment or charge for instruction. Fees are one-time charges for services and for the use of equipment or facilities. Amounts may be reduced by the award of financial aid.
Housing Definitions
This institution provides residential facilities (such as dormitories) on or near campus.
Campus Setting Definitions
Rural - Census-defined rural territory that ranges in distance from less than 5 miles to more than 25 miles from an urbanized area, as well as being less than 2.5 miles to more than 10 miles from an urban cluster.
Town - Territory inside an urban cluster that ranges in distance of less than 10 miles to more than 35 miles from an urbanized area.
Suburban - Territory outside a principal city and inside an urbanized area with a population ranging from less than 100,000 to one of more than 250,000.
City - Territory inside an urbanized area and inside a principal city with a population ranging from less than 100,000 to one of more than 250,000.
Test Scores Definitions
The search returns schools with 25th percentile scores within the selected min and max.
The 25th percentile is the score which 75% of students scored above (or 25% of students scored at or below).
Reported test score percentiles are for first-time enrolled students.
